Chicago Premiere

February 19 – March 28, 2015

Written by Christopher Shinn

Directed by Nate Silver
Featuring: Paige Collins, Danny Martinez, Michael Kurowski, and Robert Howard

On a lonely Fourth of July in Hartford in 1996, June, a sixteen-year-old white boy, sneaks out for his first ever tryst with Joe, a closeted, married black man he’s met over the Internet. On the same night, just across town, studious high-schooler, Abigayle, escapes her ailing mother to go out with Dexter, a twenty-year-old low-level drug dealer. In and around the city, as America celebrates its independence, these two couples get to know themselves and each other, as they navigate the journey from strangers to intimates. In the stark landscapes of movie theatres, fast food restaurants, darkened churches, parking lots and public parks, they grasp for connection but reveal the limits of desire, and the possibilities for transcendence.

★★★★ "Four is a consummate work of art from a theatre on the make. I would be remiss if I didn’t offer a disclaimer to anyone intent on attending for the first time: be careful. Once you’ve seen a Jackalope production you may never want to see anything else.

Chicago Stage Standard

★★★ "Nate Silver’s measured, handsomely staged production for Jackalope Theatre Company carefully captures the ambiguities of such fraught encounters, the equal mix of elation and uncertainty... as the title suggests, all four of these actors offer winning work.

Time Out Chicago

"The telling encounters are lovingly sculpted in Nate Silver’s staging for Jackalope Theatre...Four just stands for itself, a slice of art delicately delivered in Jackalope’s less-is-more local premiere."

Stage and Cinema
